Panshet Backwaters - Ghol Village

Panshet dam is 40km away from Pune. Its scenic backwaters have beautiful and silent trails, which take you through the entire backwaters and circle back to the wall of the dam (That’s known as a Parikrama J).

The trail that I took starts from the right side of the Panshet dam wall, near Panshet boating resort point. You can carry your cycle up to this point in your vehicle, park your vehicle anywhere on this road, and start cycling. The first few kilometers from boating resort point take you past a few farm houses and resorts.  It is safe to park your vehicle around them.

My plan was to start from Panshet boating club and go all the way till end of the road, to a point where Kokan starts. There is a village at the end named Ghol where this road ends; it is around 30Kms from the Panshet dam wall. The entire road goes alongside the backwaters to your left and the hills to your right, thereby making it very scenic. There are many fresh water streams on this road that continue to flow till the month of February. So the water is always available here during this time.

Please note that this road goes through a very lonely place. You won’t find a single hotel or a store throughout this trail. There are a couple of houses every 5 KMs and that is all. There is no traffic at all on this road. So before attempting this trail, ensure that you have enough food and all the necessary accessories. Your cell phone will move out of the coverage area once you cross the first few kilometers on this track.

This trail has too many ups and downs, one almost at each corner. For more details, you can check the elevation graph that I have shared here. The entire road is in a good condition. Therefore, I recommend having a road bike or a hybrid bike for this trail.

This road goes straight to the Ghol village. There is an uphill climb before reaching this village. From this village you can do a small yet an adventurous trek to the Kokan Diva fort. This trek is not for the weak hearted J. Two of my good friends declared their retirement from trekking after doing this trek :-).

I could not reach the Ghol village because of the cut-off time I put for my return journey. I returned from Dapsare village that is 8KM before the Ghol village.

From Dapsare village you can take a left and go towards Shirkai village to complete the Panshet Parikrama. A word of caution - this entire route is more than 70Kms J
So, test your limit folks!
Enjoy! J
